Description

She almost felt as though she was following one of the golems of stone and ice she'd seen in this endless snow plain. It never tired, It never seemed to look away. She wasn't so lucky. Her small legs felt like stone and lead, and her breath felt like sandpaper against her dry throat. She felt light headed and tired, and her body drooped. She glanced at the snow, but then suddenly found herself mezmerized. It wouldn't hurt just to lay down for a second, would it? No...just for a couple of moments, it wouldn't hurt. Her knees bent and she carefully lowered herself down, pulling up her hood into a makeshift pillow and she rested her head against a thick mound of snow.

The lights in the sky were pretty to look at, and she had no doubt that It still followed. And she would too! She just needed to rest for a moment. It wouldn't be long before she could get back up and keep following It.

It only felt like a few seconds before suddenly she realized that her eyes were closed. They flew back open, and she couldn't find It, or the lights It followed. The snow around her had melted and refrozen, into a small, little girl shaped bowl of ice, and she hastily yanked herself out, and stared at the silhouette she left behind. Standing above it, the indentation looked like half of a casket.

She looked around, fear tugging at her heart. She could feel her pulse skip every other beat, and tears stung the corners of her eyes as she spun frantically. She couldn't see It, and It never left behind any traces in the entire time she'd followed It. Her small voice broke the heavy silence, and she let out a soft whimper as it echoed endlessly around her. She felt the tears grow larger, and she collapsed to her knees as she gripped her coat close to her body. She didn't know how long she stayed that way, sniffling and struggling not to break down, before suddenly a shudder broke the ground beneath her. She released a terrified cry as she fell backwards, and she clenched her eyes shut, expecting to hit ground at any moment. But it never came. Her eyes cracked open, and she found herself staring into the blank face of Its mask. It sat, holding her with its tail, snow falling off of its back and shoulders and along the arch of its neck. Even as she looked at It, the eyes seemed to regain light, as if a candle being relit after being blown out, and suddenly light bathed both the girl and her It in a cool purple, blue, and green hue as the dancing lights in the sky seemed to return.

She released a soft whimper and started to cry, and It gently set her down as It tilted Its head, then slowly, as if using muscles not required for walking was foreign to It, extended a massive, lithe paw towards her. Her mittens clasped Its paw before either could even really process what she was doing, but she huddled close to the only source of warmth she knew in the snowy wasteland.

Quietly, nearly unnoticeable, she whispered out a soft thank you to It. Maybe It didn't understand her, but she didn't care. It hadn't left without her.

She could tell It wanted to start moving again. It was looking at the lights, and Its tail lashed impatiently, and she released a hoarse, tired giggle. It looked at her and tilted Its head, then watched as she turned and started to run in the direction that the lights flowed. It stayed still for a moment, confused, then suddenly stood and with a thrust from Its powerful back legs, It had caught up to her headstart, and It began to lope at her pace lazily, keeping Its gaze on the sky, but every once in a while, It would look down to make sure she was there.
